about

Inspired by 2 verses (Alice added a 3rd verse) from Thomas Talley's "Negro Folk Rhymes," first published in 1922 and still available. The conversation between the sow and the barrow is probably a veiled expression of resistance dating back to the days of slavery. We set the words to the unusual version of "Angeline the Baker" played by Norman Edmonds of Hillsville, VA. Thomas Talley (1870-1952), was an African-American scholar and folklorist who collected from the African-American communities around where he lived in Tennessee. The collection is known as the first compilation of African-American secular folks songs by an African-American scholar, as well as the first of any Tennessee folk songs. It's a fascinating book.

lyrics

Barrow says to the old sow
I’ll tell you what I know
I see old farmer comin'
And I don’t want to go
I don’t want to go
I don’t want to go

The old sow says to the barrow
Tell you what let’s do
I’ll get old farmer’s broad ax
He’ll die in the pig pen too
Die in the pig pen too
Die in the pig pen too.

Die in the pig pen fightin'
We’ll die, die in the war
Die in the pig pen fightin'
Die with a bitin' jaw
Die with a biting jaw
Die with a biting jaw.
